I work in IT in the Boeing division that build this satellite. I am not a spokesperson for the company. I may have actually seen it during build, but I don't actually pay that much attention to each one.
I have supported, in particular, the group that does the simulation testing of the 702 (and all other Boeing satellites from the El Segundo facility). They are analyzed mathematically, then physically tested against the math models. And that in all areas, thermal, vibration, electrical etc. If there is any variance at all - it is almost a crisis. What I am saying is the level of test is 100% and knowledge and tolerance for variance is 0.
This satellite is profoundly complicated and complex and expensive. Between the triple junction solar power, fuel power, batteries, Xeon propulsion, it is completely and utterly off the scale of normal human comprehension - yes it does take rocket scientists. Oh, and then there are acutual section that do the TV broadcasting.
Now, this does not explain the problems that occurred in the first batch of 702 satellites. Version 1 issues at least. I will not address that, except to say the issue are solved as best I know - and I am sure the insurance companies have insisted on.
But, even they, did not need to shut off and reboot periodically - if for no other reason, they don't run on Window!

I see no comparison described or inferred...Is it true that the satellite, because of inherent malfunctions and lack of testing, periodically needs to be turned off and on, losing all data...but Boeing promises a software update any day/week/month/year now?
JH, we appreciate the participation of all our readers. I am publicly asking you to stop grinding your DirecTV axe at this site. The one liners and wisecrack shots across the bow of DirecTV needs to stop as they add nothing to the information provided. If you have something to say then back it up with a description of your experience or supporting information on the net via links that is useful to the readers.
To end this now, there isn't a company out there without problems and each one has their detractors and fans due to poor or great service in nearly all cases. No company has earned a halo over their heads yet! You have posted flaming opinions a number of times at the site and for you the evil one was DirecTV, we get that... And what ever you found better there will be others who think they were evil. Enough already!

The purpose of HD Library and Forum is to provide accurate help, education, assistance and reference information in understanding and using HD video and audio products so posts may be deleted or edited. This is achieved with a technical moderator that handles civil and uncivil disputes as well. While free speech is allowed in many cases these are technical discussions. We are seeking the truth regardless of the outcome. In this sense the site is not a free-for-all. Please, no flames, inflammatory remarks, name calling or foul language. Please make your point with intelligence, wit, and facts with integrity and respect. Of course there are many opinions and please express yours within the framework of the Forum.
Any member that becomes belligerent, argumentative, posts smart-ass comments or requires too much attention of the site librarian/moderator will lose their posting privileges. While these rules are relaxed in the "HD Coffee Shop and Member Chit Chat" section related to politics, religion and opinion oriented topics they are strictly enforced in all other sections.
This is a professional site and is provided for free to assist pros and end users with audio and video science. If you receive an e-mail asking you to stop doing something or change something, please do it. We do not have time to enter into lengthy discussions over the merits of your position or ours and if you become a nuisance you will lose your posting privileges.

Hi JH,[email protected] wrote:Blogs are not only for extolling the virtues of a product/company, but for bitching and moaning. If you don't like the latter...too bad.
I have PM'd and emailed you privately about this. I am posting that here as a reply so it can be noted for others to read as well.
We are not a "blog", and as Richard subsequently posted, our forum is not for bitching and moaning. We don't mind opposing viewpoints, but we do mind factless accusations. That is why you were pressed for a link or reference to your claim. No harm done (hopefully).

I thought that this forum was suppose to be a way of people exchanging ideas, no matter what format they use. I say that if you have a gripe about a company, let me know so I can read a complaint, even undocumented, and make up my own mind! Also, I found the banter quite amusing, but I guess certain techno-nerds have no sense of humor. I have plenty of "undocumented complaints" about Mediacom cable in my area, that might assist people in their choice of video entertainment in my area. I guess now I should take this as being "warned" not to say anything bad about a company without having the "proper" documentation, or I might get a verbal spanking!

HiTekRedNek,
Ideas yes, one liners and wisecracks, no. Those aren't ideas, just emotional responses of frustration that add nothing to the record.
As an example:
you can't say - DirecTV sucks
The one liners and wisecrack shots across the bow of DirecTV needs to stop as they add nothing to the information provided.
you can say - DirecTV did (relate your story) and they suck.
If you have something to say then back it up with a description of your experience or supporting information on the net via links that is useful to the readers.
You can't say something bad without explaining why you are saying it, that is all. Complain away following those rules!

Just wanna add... this was NOT a one time incident and instead was a continuous problem that had been discussed with the poster a number of times... While the occasional outburst is certainly allowed if not understandable you cross the line when it becomes a continual attack of grade school expression on a company or another member who likes them.
