So, what did everybody think of the new series on last night? What great shots! A lot of motion sometimes makes for some blurring. My wife thought the predator/prey angle was a little over done. Maybe it was. I was really hoping they would have flown around the summit of Everest during "Mountains". The great camera angles and the rare footage of several species was amazing. Looking forward to the next eight episodes.

Beautifuly photography, but a few critiques:

1) Not enough time spent with some of the subjects - I wanted to see more footage - such as the momma polar bear hunting seal pups on the ice, teaching her cubs. instead they choose to "tell us about it." Too much cutting away to the next scene without giving the audience what it wanted to see. Perhaps this 11-part series should have been much longer?

2) If I hear "never before seen on film" one more time I may just put a brick through my TV!! (Kidding, of course) But announcing to the viewer that the Himalayan Snow Tiger is being "caught on film for the first time ever" is fine, but no need to tell us 2 minutes later that "this Himalayan Snow Tiger hunt is something never before captured on film." Well, uh, if the animal itself had never been caught on film, surely a semi-intelligent human being would be able to make that conclusion? lol. IMO, no need to over-hype the "never before seen" announcements to the point they cause viewer laughter.

Loved everything else, though. How bout that great white attack shot in super-slo-mo?

What an extraordinary three hours last Sunday night! I hope its ratings blew away the "top three" networks.

I chatted with two of the producers yesterday online. Very mature...humble...and in awe of what this planet is able to produce. And they are hopeful/optimistic for how we can mold our future.

They are already working on other projects, including a "Costeau-like" underwater project.

Due to the fact that they were, indeed, jaw-dropping scenes, I didn't mind being told that I was seeing something "never before filmed" (grin).

I wondered how they got that "top of Everest" footage, because I knew that the air was too thin for helicopter rescues. I was told they used a fixed-wing aircraft...oxygen masks...and they removed a door from the plane to shoot through.

Twelve months year in the planning...four years of shooting...and one truly extraordinary television experience.

Planet earth's on tonite. Sorry, but I'm promoing it as the best thing that's ever happened to TV. HD Discovery theater brings TV to the highest levels of our culture even surpassing PBS, which is also great. Oprah says it's a must and she's right. I'm getting so addicted to this stuff now, it is like a drug. And DVR really makes it neat. So just another reminder to enjoy.

Nature sucks! Want examples? How about elephant trunks, mosquitos, whirlpools, tornados, all those baby mammals, etc., etc. What about all the killing, violence, destruction, decay, disease, pain, suffering, etc, etc.?

Sounds like Green Peace needs to get involved and brow beat mother nature for being so cruel...
