Converting 1080i to 720p (and you are correct about that) isn't optimal, but it should still look better than 480i.
Did you change the GT4 output to 1080i? You have to do into Options -> Screen Settings, the bottom dropdown. You can set it to normal (480i), Progressive (480p) or HDTV (1080i). You must do this each time you start the game - it won't remember it.
It won't look like HDNet, but there should be some improvement.
PS2 goes 1080I!!! GT4 will be first game!

PS3 is a very exciting product! Now if they could just feed that excitement...
Too bad it butchers the PS2/1 games. Better off keeping your PS2 and let your display do the scaling.
The GT HD download through about end of January still did not have good steering wheel programming for the Logitech (that wheel was one of the best game controller investments I have made thus far). I have not checked for a current download. Are you running a wheel?
Have you played the MotorStorm download? While not a sim it sure was a bunch of fun and I look forward to renting it soon... The download was 720P so I suspect the final release is too.
There is another new download, 1080P native game, forget the name but it is about drifting. Not my thing, like driving a go cart through the turns, but it also had it's fun aspect and very cool graphics.

when the Sony Styles Web site offered it for $ 599.00 and if you bought
it with current promotion of a Sony / Visa credit card Sony wil give you $ 100.00 cash credit toward your first Sony Styles purchase
While some people were buying the PS-3 60 Gig. unit for cost + $$$ - I snag (the PS-3) it for $ 599.00 - $100.00 = $ 499.00 direct fron Sony Styles
I mainly use it for watching Blu-Rey Dvd's on my 1080i LCD HDTV
the picture looks Fantastic
The game part is an added bonus and the Sony PS-3 Store has some great
games in HD for $ 5.99 to $ 9.99 you can download on line that are easier for me to get used to the PS-3 game controller with.
There is lots of free stuff to download and watch and play with ...
I'm very impressed and it's well worth the price I paid. And I kind of like
telling the story I got it for $ 100. less directly from a Sony Styles Store
