Color bars on video

So what technical question or comment is on your mind!

I have a 30" Samsung HDTV(model No. TX-S3082WH) I went from regular digital to digital HD. Now on some..well most channels, there is a wide color bar that goes from side to side and changes from red, blue, yellow and green. The bar is transparent so its not overly noticeable but it is anoying because I know its there. Any ideas on this?

Also I have an issue with any channels with a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen. They are always cut off about 1/3 to 1/2 up the bar. I have looked through my settings and cant find anything to adjust the image position. I have called Samsung on this issue and they cant offer any solution other than sending out a service tech. They came out once and said it couldnt be fixed. Let me know your thoughts on this one too.

If it can't be repaired, shouldn't it then be replaced ? It doesn't say much for Samsung's reputation to adopt such an attitude. Why do they think the auto industry has re-calls involving in some cases hundreds of thousands of automobiles ?

Thats what one service guy that I talked to said, but when I called back I got someone with an aditude.

Not sure if the TV is broke or if there is a system problem inducing this. One thought was image burn but that would be unusual in your case. That one will require a visit.

That sounds like overscan and an ISF calibrator or service center should be able to adjust the size controls in the service menu.

Yeah, I have the cable company coming out tomorrow to check it out

I was thinking that it should be adjustable but I guess they just want to jerk me around.

It is unfortunate that the very people, service, with access to ALL the alignments are so ignorant to performance.

It is unfortunate that consumers do not know what a performance image should look like or how to determine that so the manufacturers would have some motivating reason to build displays that actually work right or can be made to work right in a straight forward manner. Your complaint relates to excessive overscan which is typically a byproduct of a CRT display that can't image properly, in this case likely due to an inadequate power supply, which means with the image bounce test the screen size changes with output current which it really should not do but it does and they overscan it so you don't complain about the picture being smaller than the viewing area.

So what exactly should I ask the service tech to do when they return about the oversized picture?

If they know how to interpret the overscan pattern... seems that is not the case but suggest it, you are looking for 4-5 % overscan. Try that first out of respect and if they waffle then suggest they adjust vertical size until you can see the score bar. The best way to do that is record a game so you can pause it and the tech can make the adjustment.

Ok one problem down, one to go. Right now, my service provider does not have any HD DVR boxes so I cant record a game or anything to show the Samsung techs what my issue is. Hopefully they will be in soon.

Ok, both problems are now resolved. The color bars were caused by interferance when I ran the video through the receiver. All I had to do to fix that was to run it directly into the TV, the audio is still going through the receiver.

I called the service company back and told them I wanted a different tech to come out and look at my TV. He fixed it in two minutes. ( well I fixed it, he could not get into the service menu so he went back to the office and called me to walk me through it) And all this after the first tech told me that nothing could be done.

Now that I can get into the service menu and Im curious, could someone tell me what all the functions do? I can list them out if I need to but I would imagine that most of them have the same features.
