Flags of Our Fathers - DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray

Post by hidefbob »

Plot ... February 1945. Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo became a symbol of victory and made instant heroes of the American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. The surviving flag raisers did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory.

Cast ... Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach

Director ... Clint Eastwood

Thoughts ... I consider Clint Eastwood to currently be the best director in Hollywood. Everything he does, he does well. This movie is no exception. I found the movie to be fascinating and at the same time brutally realistic. The movie splits its time between what happened on the battle field and what happened to the flag raisers back in America.

"Letters from Iwo Jima" is the companion film to this story ... I have heard that you appreciate this film better after seeing the second film. They are really meant to be seen together to get the full impact.

The surround sound during the battle scenes is awesome. It puts you right in the middle of the action.

A personal note ... I never realized until I watched this film with the ending shot that I was born on the day the flag was raised.
