Sony PS3 - Reference Blu-ray Player?

I have till Jan 24th to return it to Best Buy but I would lose money...

Why?

What makes yours $800? I thought they were $600...

Richard...as I said in an earlier post, I bought one from my neighbor who is a ebay retailer and flea market sales dude...He somehow bought a bunch of these from BB and ToysRus...He sells them on ebay. He is charging 799.99 for the 60GB and 699.99 for the 20 GB. He sells them with a cash receipt. BestBuy has extended their return policy to Jan 24th for items purchased between nov 1st and Dec 24th...The 799.99 is his "buy it now" price...and then of course folks bid on them. He and i don't get along very well as I've said because of his dog. So he wasn't going to give me any kind of break on the PS3. I got tired of running around trying to find one in a store and bought one from him. I also have a 20 GB.

PS3 is the way to go. I was in SF and stumble into the PS3 (since they are hard to find) The Blu-ray picture is awsome on both movies and games "Black Hawk Down" and "Reistance for men" excellent picture. Also I'm able to access the net via wireless and my son is able to play with others on the internet.
The control might be tricky but it is easy to learn and all the options can be change on screen with out stopping the movie "on the fly" (i.e. language etc). I'm very impressed and since the battle of who will be the dominat format (blu-ray or HD DVD) is not determine I played it safe safe since we get a game console, access to the internet, save pictures and play music with the 5.1 sound etc. I belive as a value it is the best option at this time

$599.00 for the 60G at the Playstation store in SF Metreon, no big lines I was the 8 out of 12. They had been selling it since 2:00 in the afternoon and maybe they have some left. Call ahead

I've been checking last night and this morning to see what the market is like on eBay for the 60GB PS3's and found that they are consistently going for about $700, either BIN or bid. I even saw one this morning go for retail: 1 bid, $599.

Yeah, I was checking on there myself a little while ago...The 60GB are going for 700-800 or more. I saw a few auctions that were up to 1800.00!...(don't understand that)...When I bought mine the prices were higher cause it was the first week that the PS3 came out, so it seemed like a pretty good deal to me...799.99 was actually low at the time and I didn't have to stress whether the person on ebay was legit or not. Well, I sure don't want to lose money so I decided to put mine in the local classifieds for 900.00 OBO...The worst that can happen is that I actually "make" a few bucks...

The one's I found that were $1000+ all included games or controllers of some sort. Although I did find a few that had bids that were way over what the exact same system was at BIN in other listings ... oh well.

I'm still shopping ;-)

All was well until tonight the wife and I were watching "Click" with Adam Sandler...and it froze up once, then later we were watching X-men and it froze up 3 times!...

Reviews and reports about the "reliability" of these new HD machines to play a disc all the way through with no glitches has been sorely lacking, so thanks for this report, chuckken. My Toshiba HD-A1 seems to have no problem with SD discs, but has had a couple of half second stutters that gets the audio a split second off with HD DVDs. Also, some half speed to double speed wandering. I haven't played too many discs with it yet, but it seems the player needs a good, clean, nonscratched HD disc to have a chance.

A problem free DVD movie experience is very important to me. I spent quite some time earlier looking for an upconverting player that would not only put out a great picture, but would also not freezeup and stutter. I found one in a Sony DVP something(loaning it to my mom). That thing ran anything you put in it without a single problem-always.

I would say that the video/audio of the new HD player with an HD disc is at least 30% better than my old upconverter. But after one freezeup, the total experience of the two is about equal-to me. After two or more problems, I would rather have my old dependable back.

BTW, did an ISF with a Sony PS3 and the SD DVD is downright NASTY and useless! We could not get it to do 16:9!!! The xbox 360 smokes it if you readjust your black level...

I look forward to the firmware upgrade...

Considering both of these products want to be the center piece and media hub of an HD system the universal delivery of quality has been quite poor.

You are quite welcome. I am anxiously awaiting my Pioneer Elite Blu-Ray which was released on the west coast Dec 20th and due here on or about the 1st of the year......Reports on this player are very good. There are several new owners over at AVS and so far it is the "only" player with no freeze ups or problems. I know it will be firmware upgradable for the new audio codecs. Probably won't here the news till CES in Vegas this coming month. The Pioneer Elite is the one to get. I have sold both my PS3's they are worthless to me and have no IR support. Both players had freeze ups and also multitudes on AVS experienced the same thing. Can't wait for my Elite!....
