I saw some clips from this movie as a kid but my parents would not let me stay up to watch it.
Well that was decades ago and I have had the best experience I could possibly have and it was worth the wait since TV in 1970 could not have delivered that experience!
As movies go this is not a great movie per say, just a good one that is entertaining. But, if you are into auto racing, this is the movie to see based on all accounts! Everything you are about to see was really filmed with no CG. The intent was to capture the reality of auto racing and features prominent cameos from the actual race drivers of the time with filmed scenes of real races mixed in with the fake ones for the movie. While not earning an Oscar for cinematography it is hailed by all even 40 years later as the reference for an auto racing film and some of the shots are killer indeed! It did earn Oscars for Best Sound Effects, Best Film Editing and Best Sound and director John Frankenheimer received a nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures by the Directors Guild of America.
The HD experience was awesome and highly recommended being an older film with a 2.20 aspect ratio with lots of details and information in the image that SD DVD will easily soften and obscure. Considering the age of the movie the sound was quite good!
