Looks like you know a lot of about my Toshiba DLP
Shortly after my warranty expired , of course, My picture developed a shadow appro. 5 inches wide going top to bottom on the far right side.
Any idea what component would cause this and approx. price to repair.
Also.....How many hours is a lamp good for.
Thanks so much in advance Don

Hi Don,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. Off the top of my head sounds like your light engine. Recommend you contact your favorite repair center or call Toshiba for your nearest authorized service center to get pricing and they may insist on inspection/estimate prior to providing a price.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the very fast reply. Is the light engine, the Texas Inst. chip that reflects the light? If so, it sounds expensive to repair. I thought the chip was very reliable, and good for 100,000 hours plus. Maybe I should put the set out at the street, and let it disappear.
If the bulb last 5000 hours and cost $200 to $300 , and the repair about $600 to $700 or more,....I could almost buy a new set...with up dated technology.
I am an unhappy camper, with Toshiba..and Texas Inst.
Thanks again Don
P.S. What kind of set do you own.....Plasma...LCD......DLP....or a good old reliable tube.....and why?????

As a manufacturer the only thing you buy from TI is the DMD device, the imager. It is upon someone else to take that DMD device and design a light engine to drive it. Some manufacturers do this in house and others contract outside vendors that whole sales light engines to the industry. On top of that some manufacturers simply buy the complete product, provide their own cosmetic design and put their name on it. Yours is one of those and is made by LG but forget callling LG about it because officially it is Toshiba's product and their responsibility.

More than likely your failure is related to the light path which is the light engine and has nothing to do with the DMD imaging device from TI.

As for being unhappy welcome to the new world of VERY expensive displays when you buy and when you repair. In the past an extended warranty was clearly a choice and fair gamble but these days not having one could clearly be a dis-service to yourself due to the expense of repair which rarely equals the price of the extended warranty. We may see that changing though as insurance carriers are starting to see that charging the same old price they did for CRT is not covering the repair expense of the new technology; I expect the price to go up unless the failure rate is low enough to maintain current levels.

While you could include the lamp in your estimation of damages that would be like including tires on your car. If you buy a lamp based display changing the lamp is going to be part and parcel of ownership. If limiting your display expenses over the life of the product is your concern then don't buy another lamp driven product which pretty much leaves you with plasma and CRT. Personally I love 'em because I can refresh the performance of the display and return to full light output by changing the lamp - something you can't do with plasma or CRT!

None the less, I suspect once you get a price you may very well find you are not that far off from replacement even without the lamp. If you want any assistance from Toshiba then you need to get an authorized service center out to inspect and estimate the repair and then grab your copy of your sales reciept and tell Toshiba how you feel and how you want them to assist you with this repair.

As for what I own... CRT RP, LCD FP, DLP FP, DLP RP. All of my display choices were based on performance and the ability to be ISF calibrated.
