Problem Connecting PC to Samsung HP R5052 via HDMI/DVI cable

Post by sanach »

I got nVidia GeForce FX 5500 video card on my PC with VGA and DVI ports, VGA connects to VGA port on my Samsung HP R5052 plasma just fine and works fine, but when I'm trying to connect PC to TV via DVI-to-HDMI cable, TV does not detect presents of the device connected to HDMI port at all. Does anyone know what's the problem there? PLEASE HELP, WANT TO HAVE PC CONNECTED TO MY PLASMA VIA HDMI/DVI!

I had the same problem with my Hitachi Ultravision. It does not have a VGA or DVI input. I do have two HDMI inputs and thought I would get a cable like the one you are using. (HDMI/DVI). Did not work no matter what I tried. My final solution was to purchase a DVI to Component Video adapter that fits onto the DVI out on the PC video card. You then connect a component video cable to the component input on the TV and it works great. I know for a fact that some TVs can use DVI to HDMI and some can't for various reasons that would be too long to elaborate on here.
Now my Sony TV will work with DVI/HDMI cable. For an experiment I used the Component video adapter to its component inputs and could not detect any quality of picture difference. I could see degradation in the picture using VGA out to VGA in though. Conclusion: Go with component video adapter to fit on the DVI out of the PC and use your component input on your TV.

That is what I heard and that is what I was afraid of: Samsung does not support computer being connected to the HDMI :(
I anticipate suggestion, but I got only 2 component in's on TV and they used by PS2 and DVD/Home Theater system and I'd rather keep it this way and just keep PC on VGA input, it's my second PC and I don't use it that much anyway. Thanks for the info.

This sounds like an EDID problem...

The blame can fall in either camp... If the manual says it does not support PC connections via HDMI then it is what it is but since you a VGA input I doubt that is the case.

Does anyone know what specifications to look for when purchasing an LCD TV to insure that it will be able to properly display a signal from a computer via HDMI/DVI?

We are preparing to equip a new high school, and need to come up with the specs for these TV's soon. We want to avoid using legacy connections (such as VGA), and go digital instead. In part, this is because we want to avoid any potentially unpleasant DRM (Digital Rights Management) issues that might pop up in the near future.

We know that we need to specifiy that the LCD TV's HDMI / DVI connections are HDCP (High-definitition Digital Content Protection) compliant, but are unsure what to look for to insure that our computer signals will display properly using these connections.

We also know that any HDMI switchers we use should have the repeat function.

It would even be helpful if you know from experience of any brand/model that does function successfully in this manner.

We are under a short timeline, so any assistance you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I wish there wer an answer to your question but there simply isn't. I know of no chart documenting wacky connection problems. The only good news is this is not the ordinary at all and for the most part stuff works as it should. The key for you I suppose is to check the displays before hanging them and work with a supplier that will take them back if necessary.
