Plot ... "In the early years of the 17th century, North America is much as it has been for the previous five thousand years - a vast land of seemingly endless primeval wilderness populated by an intricate network of tribal cultures. Although these nations live in graceful harmony with their environment, their relations with each other are a bit more uneasy. All it will take to upset the balance is an intrusion from the outside. One is not long in coming."
Cast ... Colin Farrell, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, Q'Orianka Kilcher (amazing performance for such a young actress)
Highly recommended ... It definitely qualifies for my top 10 movies of 2005 (it was on Richard Roeper's top 10 ... #2).
What makes this movie so good in my opinion? ... it protrays the natives (or "naturals" as they are called in the movie) in an honest and realistic way (not as generic Indians, by Virginian Algonquians), it avoids the romantized "Disney" version of Pocahontas (emphazing her curiosity rather than any romance) and it uses untypical production techniques like hand held cameras and natural lighting (using the camera to view the action 360 degrees). There is limited dialogue in this film, relying more on gestures and the thoughts of the 3 main characters. The film comes across more like a documentary than a dramatic film. I really enjoyed this movie both for its educational and entertainment value.
Features ... lengthy feature on the making of the movie on the DVD and a extensive interactive computer features.
