As we all know the pixel count for HD is either 1280X720 or 1920X1080. When HDTV was introduced in 1998 there were only a handful of professional products worldwide that could truly come close to display that level of resolution horizontally, 1920 or 1280, or vertically, 1080 or 720. To begin the HDTV movement a number of manufacturers also produced 720X480 displays known as 480P. On top of that we were living in a 99.9% 4:3 content world (not including anamorphic widescreen 16:9 DVD movies, and some letterboxed laserdiscs) and many manufacturers provided 4:3 displays for SD content that could also display a 16:9 image within the 4:3 screen ratio of the TV, although many at the beginning did so by using lines of horizontal resolution for the black bars rather than adjusting the raster and maximize the use of the CRT
