Alice and Dan fall in love at first sight. Unfortunately Dan falls in love with Anna. Unfortunately Anna prefers to fall in love with Larry. It gets even more complicated. In the end it seems the question is who really expresses true love and who does not. This is not a chick flick. It is a slice of reality, deep and full of the vulgarities of everyday life as it explores how men and women deal with love, passion and betrayal. Not for teens and if so with an adult. Not necessarily entertainment as much as a statement of the human condition.
Clive Owen and Natalie Portman each received Oscar nominations for their perfromance!
Highly recommended for the humanity of it all!

Closer-DVD
This picture garnered one Oscar for best supporting actor and was given "Two thumbs way up" so I rented it. Boy, that was a mistake! Natile Portman, Jude Law and Julia Roberts star in this dreary Mike Nichols directed English drama about destructive relationships set in a revolving door dynamic between the four characters. We had six people over and they all scratched their heads over the pointlessness of it. I should have gone with an explosion filled action film to show off my system.
This marks the first time I have ever been dissapointed (other then obvious political propaganda films like Micheal Moore puts out) with a "Thumbs up" desigination on the box. Ebert seems to be lately in the habit of lavishing praise or finding hidden meaning in films with big star power or that agree with his ultra liberal political leanings. So what if the acting is superb? Glengary Glenross had great acting also, but it was still a teadious affair to sit through. Maybe Ebert has been at this too long.

Re: Closer-DVD
One person's boredom is another's treasure. I do have to agree on Glengarry Glen Ross though.
BTW Closer got two Oscar nominations one for Supporting Actor and one for Supporting Actress.. Neither won the Oscar. Morgan Freeman won for Million Dollar Baby and Cate Blanchette won for The Aviator.
