Do hdmi splitters work well, or do the degrade the signal? Are they "buggy"?

Can't degrade the signal and are not anymore buggy than the implementation of HDCP. If your source and display are working with HDCP properly then you should have no problems.

All legitimate HDMI products have to be licensed to use the HDMI technology and logo. Manufacturers have to send a sample product for testing to be sure it meets all requirements of the HDMI specification.

That said, this is new technology and there is always the possibility of problems.
