Re: Dvd Recorder
Thanks again for the info on the gateway...I found the LiteOn for $229.00 over at http://www.shopharmony.com/product.asp? ... &i=LVW5005 ...so I'm gonna go with it. I have cancelled the gateway...thanks again...You forgot to mention this baby has DVI to boot!...

milacqua...What am I doing wrong?...Now it records and plays back perfectly on the unit itself, but when I play it on other DVD players there is no sound?...I have been using DVD-RW discs which the manual says it doesn't need to be finalized (which it won't do anyways if I try...it just says change disc)...anyways, the sound plays perfectly through the digital coaxial out of itself, but when I put the disc into any other dvd player only the picture plays!...I'm getting frustrated with this unit!...

No sound? I can't imagine why. You are right that RW discs do not have to be finalized. Anyway, since you are getting a picture in your other players you are doing it properly as you do not just finalize sound. I can see the frustration. Here is a link that should help: http://forum.liteonit.com.tw/ then click on the discussion group for 5005 and 5001 questions, fixes and problems. There are very knowledgeable people on that board, including a rep from liteon who visits once in a while. I would also phone them and see if you can get some tech support over the phone. There must be an easy fix to this since you are indeed recording both picture and sound. I would be interested in hearing how you made out with this problem. BTW, you can learn about all the firmware hacks for 3 hour mode, macro delete, etc. at the link I gave. If none of this solves your problem I'd take the thing back. Then, I would go to AVS and hang around their dvd recorder board where all the latest info gets routed. I think right now they are highly touting a new JVC model.
Good luck!

Dvd Recorder
chuckken - oh, oh. That is right. If you do not have a player that can handle that sound format you are sunk. It is like trying to play the video of a recorded +R disc on a -R only player - it ain't gonna work. The discs I create on my 5005 play well not only on my computer but also on my Sony and Panasonic players (as long as I use good media such as Ridata or Philips). But I suppose there are some players that just are not compatible. DVD recording, as the poster above intimated, can be a royal pain in the butt because of different formats, video and audio. That is one reason why I purchased the Liteon - it plays and records all formats. I just never thought of the sound issue.
