This is another documentary with spectacular HD ice images. It will be playing again on Sun AM Nov 28 and Sat. Dec. 4 and probably again in the future.
My reason for posting is here is that it is an example of the real research going on on Global warming, and shows first hand some of the basic science that underlies the beginning of the highly fictional movie "The Day After Tomorrow".
Discovery HD shows pictures of the 1995 breakoff of a huge ice shelf, discusses how air and ocean currents affect climate, how glaciers work, and the possibility an Antartica ice shelf suddenly melting and raising sea levels world wide by 15 feet! Brutal storms too! Highly recommended for students! ( and those with curiosity)
From the Discovery Channel site:
"After a century of research, studies have determined that Antarctica has a tremendous impact on the global environment. In particular, scientists are extremely interested in the role of a massive ice sheet that covers the entire continent. British scientists reveal that enormous amounts of dense cold water originating under the Antarctic ice shelf are cooling the world's oceans. Moreover, the extremely unstable ice on the western side of the continent could threaten the earth's climate as it melts under accelerated global warming."
