Today's Show:
From time to time we take a look at the top ten selling TVs at Amazon.com. This time we are not really going to list the TVs individually but will instead focus on the overall statistics about the TVs. They're pretty enlightening if you can trust them to really indicate trends in the retail TV landscape. The list is updated hourly, so we pulled the statistics from a particular point in time. We're assuming the top ten is fairly stable, at least from an overall trend breakdown and that the list doesn't change too rapidly.

A look at the Top Ten TVs at Amazon.com

Composition Breakdown:
  • Manufacturers - Samsung (6), SONY (2), Pioneer (1), Haier (1) - The top five TVs are Samsung LCDs
  • Technology - LCD (8), Plasma (2)
  • Size - 52 (2), 50 (2), 46 (3), 40 (1), 32 (1), 7 (1)
  • Other - 120Hz (4), 1080p (8), 720p (2)
  • Price Range $1900 - $545 There is also a portable 7 inch digital TV that goes for $130

Average Price by Size:
  • 52 - $1645
  • 50 - $1553 (both Plasmas)
  • 46 - $1338
  • 40 - $880
  • 32 - $545
  • 7 - $130

About The HT Guys

The HT Guys, Ara Derderian and Braden Russell, are Engineers who formerly worked for the Advanced Digital Systems Group (ADSG) of Sony Pictures Entertainment. ADSG was the R&D unit of the sound department producing products for movie theaters and movie studios.

Two of the products they worked on include the DCP-1000 and DADR-5000. The DCP is a digital cinema processor used in movie theaters around the world. The DADR-5000 is a disk-based audio dubber used on Hollywood sound stages.

ADSG was awarded a Technical Academy Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2000 for the development of the DADR-5000. Ara holds three patents for his development work in Digital Cinema and Digital Audio Recording.

Every week they put together a podcast about High Definition TV and Home Theater. Each episode brings news from the A/V world, helpful product reviews and insights and help in demystifying and simplifying HDTV and home theater.
