Hi there.
I have an older Mitsubishi WS65908 with RGB component inputs (only) for 1080i.

My questions are:

Since most inputs on DVD players are now HDMI, what do I need to do to/buy to get a DVD-player to display at 1080i?

I have Dish Network, but no HDTV, yet. Is it common for HDTV tuners to come with RGB outputs to display at 1080i?

Sorry about the level of questions, I'm really new to this stuff!!

I have the same situation with a 55" Mits diamond CRT. You can't use an upconverting DVD player but you can find standard DVD players that output component video at 480p. And for our TVs (they're native 480p) that's about as good as you can get - you won't gain much (if anything) by upconverting to 1080i.

If you get a Blu-Ray player then you should be able to watch Blu-Ray movies at 1080i (and video games if you get a PS3) but standard DVDs will not upconvert to 1080i - they're restricted to 480p just like the standard upconverting DVD players. At least I believe that's how the PS3 works with BD movies - I've only watched one and didn't do any testing to make sure it was 1080i.

I believe all current HDTV receivers (Dish, DirecTV and cable) have component outputs that will send 1080i.

I think you mean "Since most outputs on DVD players are now HDMI...", yes?

Standard DVD players will not output anything more than 480p over component. And in order for them to upscale beyond 480p over HDMI, the DVD player will need to establish and HDCP connection with your display, which means your display has to have an HDMI or DVI input to receive more than 480p from a Standard DVD player.

If you opt for a high definition DVD player (ie. Blu-ray), as I understand it, those will output up to 1080i over component connection, but only for discs with high definition content. They will not upscale Standard DVD to more than 480p over component.

Yes, the Dish Network HD set top box has component outputs that will output a 1080i signal.
