The HD DVD players do not support DVD Audio. All DVD Audio discs include a DD and/or DTS SD audio track - that's what you heard. ALL DVD players can play those tracks, nothing special required...

true that; but it played neil youngs "harvest in dts 96/24 surround, but on further reflection, yes the other discs WERE in dd 5.1 or dts 5.1. my oppo 981 plays the advanced res track. haven't gone thru the rest to see if neil is the only disc that will play in hi-res, but i suspect it is.

Granted but DTS is a lossy codec so it would not qualify as HD audio. Great audio, better than DD, better than generic DTS but still not the real McCoy.

As far as I know DVD-A only plays on most universal players, not high def players. Sure, HD and Blu Ray can play music at better codecs, but music (except for concerts) have not been released on either HD or Blu Ray yet. The least expensive quality universal player is one of the OPPO players. I like both the OPPO DV-980 and the OPPO DV-981. These players playback almost all formats that aren't HD or Blu Ray.
Go to OPPO website.

agreed. i own the 981 and the ability to play both hi res formats is great. the 981 is not the last word in resolution, but my Patricia Barber sacd sounds great, and Santana's ABRAXAS sounds better on the oppo than on the ps3!

Kato-

The OPPO should play SACD discs and DVD-A better than the PS3. PS3 doesn't play those formats. The PS3 plays DVD's and Blu Ray. And it probably only does a good job on Blu Ray.

the ps3 does play SACD in stereo and multichannel via hdmi-ask herbie hancock's "chameleon",Chris Botti's "night sessions", or any of the Stones discs released a few yrs ago by Abco. if sony enabled a gaming device to play blu-ray, why wouldn't it enable a hi-res audio format that they also developed/support.
