Hi,
Sort of a newbie to HDTV,but understand most of the specs,terms.etc.

Here are my issues:
Just bought Sony 32" S Series Bravia TV 720P

NO cable yet,just small indoor antenna

Over the air HD broadcasts look very good/great!

So then I buy a Sony DVP-NS72HP upconverting DVD player using HDMI cable.
I play Planet Earth DVD and a few other DVD's and notice a lot of pixelization and general lack of detail. They play much better through my 5 year old 32" Panasonic Analog Pure Flat TV and Panasonic DVD player!

I have tried forcing the Sony DVD player to send the TV different Resolutions and it still looks like crap (relatively speaking).

Am I expecting too much from a $99 DVD player?
I tried a 6 year old non progressive scan DVD player through my S-Video input in the TV and could not tell much if any difference.

I really hate to take this set back because I know it can display beautful HD
images over the air.I feel maybe I expected much more performance from
DVD's and the TV is exposing limitations in the DVD signal?

Any help would be appreciated.

What model is the TV? On your remote look for a display or info button that tells you what scan rate you are receiving? Not sure on those buttons but one should give you that info. When you find it see what scan rate the DVD player is providing.

It sounds like your player is not set for an HD scan rate or is refusing to...

the TV is a Sony SL-32SL130 (from Costco) which I believe is the same as the Sony SL-32S3000.When playing a DVD I checked the display on th TV and it indicated the input as 1080P. I know the TV has to down convert to its native 720P (correct?) and I'm assuming that's where my issues are arising from,as 1080i broadcast looks great.Also I'm used to the great black depth my Panasonic 32" Pure Flat had which I know most LCD's don't seem to be able to achieve.Most of the issue is the Pixelization squares I can see when I'm close to the TV watching a DVD and also the detail loss during fast moving scenes.Also dark scenes are fairly grainy.I know I'm trying to compare it to a nice CRT,but I was expecting a better picture from DVD's. K... set player for 720p. Next look for a mode on the display that sounds like cinema, movie, pro; that will ball park your settings. Make sure that player is set for 16:9 and your display aspect is set for 16:9. Play back widescreen movies only.

Thanks Richard, I set the output res on the dvd player to 720P and started using some of the other adjustments available,(sharpness,Etc.)
Looks good,I think I just was not used to an LCD TV and expected a different type of picture. I may be happier with a Plasma as I read that they handle fast motion (Football,Etc.) better than LCD's.

Sony SL-32SL130 (from Costco)

That is Sony at their least expensive... I believe the XBR series is for performance folk.
