My understanding is that it is best to match the native resolution of the set to the resolution of the source. Since most HDTV is 720P or 1080i, why are sets made with 768 resolution insted of 720P, to at least match one of the source types?

It's a PC computer monitor resolution. It must be easier to mass produce than a true 1280x720p.
