Hello,
I recently purchased a 40 inch Sony KDL-40v2500 LCD displays. I have now noticed that when the screen is dark (or no signal is coming in) in top right corner of the display there is a bright area. It kind of looks like the light from the back leaks through, to the front, in that corner. It is visible for maybe 3 inches away from the corner. After the TV runs for about an hour or 2, it goes away. Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone know what may be wrong? Thank you.

Could this be caused by the external placement of a nearby speaker/magnet?

I just spoke with Sony. They say the same thing ... that placing next to a magnetic field could cause this. However, I don't have a speaker next to it, and in addition, this goes away after the TV has been running for an hour or so. So, magnetic field is ruled out, unless my walls give off some kind of radiation

What I am thinking now is that maybe it is temperature related ... somehow. Once the TV warms up, this goes away. It has gotten colder in the last couple of weeks (NY area, and this is when I started to see the problem) and maybe there is a weird cold current flowing through the room, hitting that corner of the TV. But, this seems almost impossible, although there is a window 3 feet away.

The Sony people also said to turn on the Auto Light Sensor, which basically decreases the backlight almost to nothing. It did help, but I can still see it. I think it is more turning the backlight down, than fixing the problem.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

A magnet can affect an LCD...





That is CRT DV talk, not LCD...

If either of you are unhappy get it exchanged or try a different brand of LCD.

But that still does not provide an answer to the problem. And I guess Sony people know what they are talking about ...

If it was a case of: exchange for not cost, I would have already done so. But, it will have to go through service, weeks of waiting and who knows what else. You see what kind of people you have to deal with. I am almost sure, that servicing it will not end without some other damage. So, I first want to see if I can solve this on my own.

Can you comment how the temperature relates to LCD? What exactly does it affect? I will try moving the TV further from the window, and see if that helps. Thanks,

By the way, I love this TV. I am very happy with how it worked, and this technology. But I did not spend 3k on something that is not working properly. I work too hard to afford it ... don

Considering another posted the exact same problem I suspect it is the nature of the beast. Your quickest answer to that is an exchange, not service.

What you are describing is a uniformity problem and LCD is affected by temperature. That said most products are and I do tell all my ISF clients that there is no critical viewing until the product has been on for an hour.

Yours though is a more severe issue as the error is likely visible even for casual viewers. It is curious... Sony has a uniformity problem related to heat with their SXRD line too.

Arek, although I don't own a sony lcd tv I experience the same problem that you describe with my 42" Philips lcd tv.. I live in Panama Republic of Panama, the normal temperature here is aproximately 86 F, everytime I turn on my tv right away I can see flashlights coming from places near the bottom corners of the TV(I assume because the set is "cold"), after aproximately 1/2-1 hour of the tv being in use this flashlights disappear completelely but if I turn on my air conditioner about 5-10 minutes later I begin to see a bright spot near the left bottom corner of the tv(this happens every time I turn on the A/C, if I don't turn the A/C on the bright spot never appears), so as you have described I think this has to be temperature related, I also would like to know if someone knows how an lcd can be affected by low temperatures.
