I need your help about this isue. I have a Pioneer (Prgresive Scan) DVD PLayer conected to my new HDTV. The problem is that when the DVD is set to progresive, the TV recognizes the signal as 480p, but the image produces like a gost, or some kind of distortion that I can't explain. On the other hand, when the DVD is set to interlace, the TV recognizes the signal as 480i and the image is perfect.

I beleive that in progresive the image have to be better than 480i. Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to change any setting on the TV to work properly in progresive?

By the way, I'm using component video cables.

Thanks!

Hmm... what kind of cables and how long?

That could be your problem. Your expectation with this particular display is correct that a progressive 480 should look a little better if not much better versus 480I.

That said the best alternative would be an Oppo set for 720P or 1080I.

Or even better, a Toshiba HD DVD player going from HDMI to HDMI. That last part is very important to obtain the best response. If your display does not have HDMI but DVI you are going to have signal problems because in that mode it is RGB and the Toshiba puts out PC video levels; you will have a mismatch between it and any other digital video input.

The Oppo idea is good. But my understanding is that my TV is converting every signal to 720p, its native resolution; is that right? If so, how much better will be the image with an unconverter? How can I determine if my TV conversion sistem is better that the Oppo one?

True but the scaler in your display is likely not as good...
