CableCard Swipes at Set-Top Boxes
A federal appeals court upheld an FCC mandate last month requiring cable companies to support CableCard technology -- which essentially allows consumers to get rid of their set-top cable TV boxes.

Stations oppose House 'down conversion' plan
TV stations are up in arms about a U.S. House of Representatives plan that would allow cable and satellite TV operators to down convert their HD programming for delivery to subscribers.

Are Broadcasters Being Hypocritical?
HD Observer Joseph Whip notes that local broadcasters are opposing proposed federal legislation that could permit cable and satellite TV operators to lower the quality of their High-Definition TV signals in some cases to ensure that all viewers can receive digital signals. But he says the broadcasters are already reducing the HD picture quality by providing multiple digital channels (multicasting) along with their HD feeds. Some local stations have used the Digital TV space (where HDTV feeds are sent) to launch extra digital channels for weather updates and other services.
