Holy Cow!...I just watched this flick last night ...I recorded it on my HD TiVo from Directv (channel 78 I think)...The Quality is excellent!...Hard to believe the movie is so old...Great effects too for a movie so old...This is an HD must see!

It was fantastic yet it also suffered from edge enhancement...
I have seen this movie many times and when I saw the HD broadcast figured I had to to see at lest once in HD so I did...
WOW! HD made all the difference. I expected to be just as bored as the last time yet I found that the cinematography is what makes this movie and HD is the only vehicle besides film in a theater that can do it justice.
No matter what your past thoughts are on this flick ya gotta give it one last chance in HD... That may very well change your mind on just how fantastic and entertaining an experience this movie can provide!
Until I had this experience I thought 2010 was the better movie... Watched that one too in HD and it was the exact opposite for me; now 2001 slays it in all areas!

"Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?"

" I think we really need to sit down and talk about this don't you Dave?"
About 15 minutes earlier Hal told Dave to go take him and his pod for an eternal space hike, "This converstation is over" were Hals last words!

I just finished installing my new electric screen in my bedroom and decided to watch this flick as my first screen test and MAN! The quality surpasses anything I have seen on Directv before! I would go so far as to say that in most aspects the quality even beat HD-DVD! I was mesmerized by this flick! This is definitely an HD must see!

2001 always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Way back when it opened, a few of my buddies and I went into NYC to see the opening of the almost porno flick, "I am Curious Yellow," which was creating quite a stir back then. We were underaged and got the boot, so we went across the street and saw 2001, which, to say the least, was a puzzling letdown to us all.

I hear ya! Yes, I agree it looks fantastic in HD, but this movie needs about 40 minutes edited out. Perhaps when Dave is entering the monolith, some acid would make it better?

I first saw this film in Beverly Hills, CA in 1968. I went to that particular theater to see it in 70mm. I fell asleep after about an hour. I watched it again, this time on VHS sometime in the 80's. I fell asleep in the first hour. I watched again, this time on a rented DVD a few years back, I actually made it all the way through. It is very beautiful to behold and has an excellent soundtrack. It is sllllloooooowwww.
I remember all the early buzz was what the obelisk was all about. Nobody seemed to care about the film itself other than to say that it was a classic. I think it's a classic as well, a classic snooze. :)

It is definately a rainy day flick...But if you are in no hurry, and just have the time to lay back and take it in, it's a great flick!...I am getting up there in years so to me it is a gas to see something almost 40 years old that looks pretty much up to date..(minus the short cut pant legs and corny way of speaking

)....Notice they had wide screen tvs and monitors in this movie!...The movie has more detail than recent sci-fi flicks I have seen...Come on guys!...This flick is almost 40 years old!...Not to mention I counted at least 5 sci-fi flicks who stole ideas and technology from this flick!...From Star Wars to iRobot there has been a slew of movies we would never have seen if it were not for this movie...
IT IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not saying it's a bad movie, just an unnecessarily long movie. Some aggressive editing is needed, but Kubrick loves to over-tell his stories.
