Video issue with Directv HDTV receiver

I just purchased a new HDTV receiver for directv. My HDTV is DVI and my receiver is HDMI. I bought and installed a backwards compatible cable. Problem is that when I am watching even a non-HD channel the video occasionaly goes out for a second or so. the satelite signal to the receiver seems fine, but my tv loses the signal from the receiver. I can tell it is not the tv because when the signal to the TV is lost it displays the video input channel I am on. I checked for cable tightness and it was fine. I am wondering if this is common or not. I experience the standard outage when switching to an HDTV channel and the receiver auto switches HDTV output to match the signal coming in. (420/720/1080) Any clue if this is normal?

Your TV is switching scan rates. Set the receiver to output either 720p (if you have a digital set with a native 720p scan rate) or 1080i (if you have a CRT) all the time. That way the TV won't switch back and forth.
