cable splitters

I am thinking about splitting my incoming cable line, running one line directly to my tv with a cablecard and running the other line to a comcast DVR/HD box.

My thought is that I would do my normal viewing using the cablecard, which gives me much better picture quality, and only use the other line with the cable box DVR for recording shows that I to watch at a later time.

My question is, will the splitter degrade my signal overall, and would one of the "high end" splitters, say from Monster, be better than the generic ones I have from the cable company?

The ones from the cable company are probably fine. Just check the signal loss (shouldn't be more than about 3 db) and only use a 2 way splitter. Make sure it's rated for high bandwidth (1 ghz IIRC). Shouldn't be a problem unless your signal strength is marginal to begin with.
