Since I have not watched these movies multiple times I was hard pressed to be aware of the additional footage. In one section of the first though this was clearly a plus as it explained the magic rope used in the second movie. I am also told in the third there was no explanation how the seeing ball was just laying in the water for one of the hobbits to find.
This version is highly recommended for it

I totally agree. I have all three extended versions and they are a marvel. What a piece of work! The DTS tracks are simply amazing. Blows my mind. I plan, one of these days, to watch all three all in a row. Twelve hours of pure ecstasy......

I know what you mean by all those "extended scene" packages. Too often they are utilized only to suck more $$$ out the public. You can probably say the same thing about LOTR, but this one (to me at least) is way different. The books and the films are works of art that fans just can not get enough of. One could (barely) endure the wait for the 2nd and 3rd pictures because you knew another would be coming, but this one? You never want it to end, especially now that there won't be anymore films. Hell, I could have watched Gandalf bathing if it meant another 20 mins.

Funny how different things make films memorable. Most of my favorites films have quotes that keep coming to mind, such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I could think of about 2 dozen film quotes from that and smile at every one of them-"That's bad business. If he'd just pay me what it costs to get me to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him!" I loved all the LOTR flicks and will certainly get the series on DVD, but I cannot think of one single quote from any of the 3 that sticks in my mind.

I love the one where someone asks Gandalf how far away Rohan is, and he says, "Oh, about three days, as the Nazgul flies."
I use that one all the time but nobody ever gets it. Ah well, tis the plight of the arcane quote user.
