Samsung SIR-T165 will work, as will the LG LST-3410A Tuner/DVR (this will record on hard drive and allow archiving to D-VHS tape
from the hard drive file). The Motorola 6212 cable box and derivative models that include FireWire outputs are also available.

Well, the closest to what James wants is the LG LST-3410A, PVR, it
does have a simple TV Guide, but, certainly not as sophisticated as a
TiVo (most other HD PVRs are just glorified VCRs--no 'Season Pass',
etc.--just set time and channel).
But, it will only record un-encrypted QAM (digital/HD cable, does
ATSC OTA also), so you'd need the cable box to record anything more
than your local HD stations, and maybe ESPN-HD. It lists for around
$799 or so.

Also, before you buy, go to the recorder forum and look at the LS-3410A Review thread (100+ pages) at AVS Forum. Some have had problems with Firewire, and the system isn't as flexible as some wish it to be with regard to archiving to HD tape. I don't do that, so don't know the details.
