TiVo has some features cable doesn't. For example, TiVo users can program their DVRs to jump forward in 30-second increments, skipping ads instead of just fast-forwarding through them. They can also connect to wireless home networks...

Can someone explain to me exactly what it means to be able to connect to wireless home networks???...

It means that by using 802.11b or 802.11g, they can jump on a wireless network for access to the Internet. Basically gives the TIVO unit Internet access. Also allows multiple TIVO units within a home to share content, without be cabled together.

A lot of people, me included, use a product like a Linksys wireless router behind our cable modes or DSL line. This allows sharing of Internet access without physically cabling to the hub/switch. Great for laptops in your home.

The home networking option is not currently available on any DitecTV Tivo unit, including the HDTiVo. You would have to hack your DirecTivo in order to connect it to a computer network (I'm not going to go anywhere near the discussion as to whether or not you should do that, there are plenty of other forums where that debate runs wild).

I still think TiVo is a great product, but unfortunately the DirecTiVo software laggs behind the "stand alone" units.
