Im thinking of buying the Sampo PME 42S6. The thing is, it has only 852 x 480 pixel native resolution. Does that mean that it cannot natively produce 1080i/720p HD signals??

Here is what Sampo says, and it sounds like they do upconversion in order to say it is "HDTV ready":

"1280x1024 SXGA Support
The onboard digital scaling engine can accept various PC and HDTV signals and digitally map the signals to fit within 852x480 pixels. Compatible signals include PC resolutions up to 1280x1024 and HDTV signals including 720P and 1080i."

Am I correct in thinking this??

you are correct

The 42S6 is not a native HD monitor. It will down convert the signal to it's native resolution. If you have the means for a true HD plasma, go for it, you'll be blown away.
