Digital Video Essentials (DVE) is an ongoing program production effort from Joe Kane Productions (JKP). Its aim is to help consumers and the audio/video industry with the transition from standard definition video to high definition. It is being produced in the 1080p/24 frame format with 6.1 channel sound and will initially be made available in the D-Theater format in 1080i/60 and 720p/60 as well as several DVD formats. We are trying to get the DVD NTSC and PAL versions of DVE MPEG encoded. No one has ever encoded directly at 24P. Sarnoff has had the NTSC master since December and LSI has had the PAL master since then as well. They are just telling us now that they may not be able to do this.

The making of DVE has been an extremely painful experience as each part of the production has required that things that had never been done before correctly.

We had to build an editing computer to do 1080P 24 at realtime because none existed, even at Lucas Digital. Apple sold Joe, wouldn't rent, 2 machines that were incapable of doing the job before they finally made one that was. So in the end he bought three machines. Oh by the way, you must provide your own software, which also didn't exist. The drivers also didn't exist. Shall I go on? I better not or we will be moved to the rant section.
