Bottom line is 1394 includes an interface called HAVI that allows you to control other products. It also provides a single connection that daisy chains from one product to another. DVI and HDMI have been positioned to replace 1394. The signal on 1394 is the actual compressed DTV bitstream used more for recording or archiving an HDTV program using a D-VHS or possibly a PC.

I would not put a whole lot of emphasis on the networking capability as much as the ability to record and time shift DTV programming.
