HDMI problems with Sony KDL46W5100 HD panel is heating up after 2hrs of use and starts to trip on and off. TV works and none HD component DVD,VCR.

Sounds like a problem with the HDMI circuit in the TV. Unless performance is your bag you don't need HDMI for an HD experience. On the other hand HDMI only outputs on sources can reduce the price of buying a new DVD or Blu-ray player. If you want your DVD player to scale to HD scan rates you have to use an HDMI cable, there is no other way.

Try analog component for your HD sources. You may not need to do anything else...

I have a friend with this TV who also had HDMI problems. A green stripe. A different cable was no help. What did help (so far) was to plug the cable into a different HDMI input on the TV. Sony could be having HDMI port problems with this model.

In conjunction w/ what Richard explained & covered .... a very inexpensive "fix" will be to buy this set (#2773) @ Monoprice - hook it up between your HD S.T.B. & any of those which ARE available and, most-likely, unused on the SONY & all-will-be fine! ... I did / these have !

p.s. - - - obviously, doesn't repair that particular HDMI port issue - - but - - who cares? .....as Richard stated, commercial HD programing &a cable HD STB doesn't NEED HDMI anyway ...

At the begining of March, I updated the firmware via the ethernet cable and the on screen menus. Within minutes of that I started having the same problem. I purchased a service plan when I bought the TV and their repair guys are telling me that it sounded like "the board was bridged". I'm not sure what this means, but they are telling me that the board for this TV is on back order and they don't know when it will be available again. They actually are replacing the entire TV for me since it has taken so long. I'm just wondering if there wasn't something wrong with the latest firmware. I don't know enough about this kind of stuff to know for sure.

Do you own this same model?

The board was bridged - never heard of it!

It is possible that during a firmware update data gets messed up and often times that will shutdown the product and there is no way out except to replace a board so it has good data. This is RARE!

Yes it was a KDL46w5100. After about an hour of watching it, it would restart on its own. The indicator stayed on, so I don't believe it lost power. But, all of a sudden, the screen would go black, the Bravia logo would come on, and then my show would come on for about 1/2 second, then the screen would go black again. It would repeat this until I powered it off and would wait about 15 min.

I no longer have the TV. They couldn't get the part to repair it so they gave me a replacement. The only problem (for them) is that none of the 46" 120hz tvs they carry had internet on them. So they ended up replacing it with a KDL46EX700 LED. Lucky me!

If yours is like the first one in this thread then it should have worked fine by not using HDMI. In that condition it would be possible to upgrade the firmware if indeed there was a firmware problem.

Due to your post I did more research and this appears to be current product, with most still being under warranty. That is far more relevant to the first poster - that person should call Sony like you did.

If this was a chassis wide failure then it is possible Sony ran out of the part. Manufacturers stock parts based on data and statistics which works rather well except for failures that they simply do not know and cannot predict.

Curiously, why did you upgrade your firmware?
