Hi I have a serious question here. My Sony40 Xbr I was watching some digital channel and went to another one it turned the Tv right off aster a few seconds, could it be the Cable co. screwing around with me? Cause they want me to use their cruddy box, but I chose not since my T.V. already is capable of receiving digi channels.

Has anyone on here ran into that problem I would like to know.

Thanks John.

Sounds like you have a problem in your set. Has this happened before? Is it possible that someone accidentally hit a remote power button?

I know of know way that the cable company could do a remote shutdown on your TV set.

I assume that you mean the set powered down or went into standby...

Patience!

You must be using the internal 'QAM' tuner, since there is no cable set top box.

And, I agree w/ dadden .... the cable company has no technical means to selectively 'shut your TV set off' compared to other customers on your street, etc.. Just their signal, w/ a subsequently blue screen, naturally!

If it continues, it's the Sony!

Nothing at all unusual with not having a cable HD Box, as long as one doesn't mind having a somewhat limited number of 'HD' channels from which to select.

I've helped a number of Seniors locally that didn't want the 'messing about' w/ a different remote, placement nor cabling of their S.T.B. nor expense of buying a Harmony!

The cable box can't do that but if you are using the AC outlet on the back of it for the Sony you should try another outlet to make sure it isn't the cable box. If it still has the problem then it is time for service!

This only happens on two of the digital ones 82.3 and 84.1 - The channel seems to come in for at least 20 secs and then freezes and that when the Tv powers off. All other channels are A-ok.

Being specific helps greatly and that is one weird problem.

On the surface it nonetheless remains unlikely the problem is due to the cable company. I assume at this point you have checked where the TV is plugged in and are not using the AC outlet on the cable box. Are you using an HDMI/DVI input on the TV or component input?

I will change the Tv position in another outlet this week, and no I don't have any other products hooked up to it. I just have it from the Tv to the outlet. It just happen on another channel 84.3

Does your cable box output different scan rates or is it a fixed scan rate? I think it's either changing the scan rate and going belly up or those channels have a higher bitrate causing the tv to exceed a power threshold.

Appears I missed something... my apologies... Scan rate doesn't matter akirby...

Try another AC outlet anyway, just in case...

You are using the Clear QAM Cable feature of your TV tuner. You did not give us a model number but there might be an option for a cable card.

It's possible there is something set incorrectly in the data stream by the cable company so it does not meet standards. That same problem may not be resolved with a cable card but it is worth a try if the product supports one. Either way, trying to get your cable company to correct such an error will get you the same result as spending your effort pounding sand with a baseball bat. I have been down this a road few times now and the final result has always been lots of phone calls and discussion, cable company denies everything, nothing changes.

You could check with Sony to see if there has a been a firmware update and if so there is a fleeting possibility that could take care of it.

The problem of the cable company meeting standards is so bad that many manufacturers dropped the cable card feature from their product lines to get rid of the hassle and customer finger pointing.

In the end you likely have no choice but to use, as you put it, one of their cruddy cable boxes
