Hey guys I have a Sony KDF-70XBR950, it's a 70 inch rear projection TV that is a few years old already. It is only capable of 1080i and not 1080p. This has never been a problem for me but I just bought a PS3 and I'm mainly going to use it for blu-ray movies. And from what I have heard I really need to get 1080p to enjoy the blu-ray to its max potential.

Now my question is this...

Is there anyway I can keep the tv and somehow buy something that converts the 1080i into true 1080p, is that possible?

Hello, I wrote a reply that was total rubbish and then looked for the specs of your display so I am rewriting this reply.

Your display has multiple Component, S-video and Firewire inputs but it also has one (1) DVI input.
This means that you are in luck. Of course this assumes that you aren't already using your DVI input for a cable/satellite input.

Assuming this your solution is relatively easy.

You must buy a converter for HDMI to DVI. You plug your PS3 in the HDMI input and connect the DVI output of the convertor to the DVI input on your display. You will not need to upscale to 1080p because the most your display can handle is 1080i but that will be OK. Set the PS3 to output in 1080i if it doesn't do it for you.

You can find convertors by googling "dvi ps3". I don't know what the best solution for this application is but there are many options available.

I'm using a PS3 with an older 1080i RPTV (Mits) via component video. Blu-Ray in 1080i looks fantastic - don't worry about it. I think the only thing DVI might buy you is upconverted standard DVDs (with component video they're limited to 480p).

I thought that the PS3 wouldn't output full 1080 resolution into a component input. I read somewhere that the player down converted the output to a Standard Definition signal.

If you are getting it then obviously I am incorrect.

I will admit that I have never used a component input for anything more than 480p so I wouldn't know. Jumped straight to HDMI after that.

It does 1080i over component for Blu-Ray and PS3 games. It won't upconvert standard DVDs to 1080i over component though.

OK, thanks for the explanation. I had forgotten that it was SD Up Converting that was cut out of the possibilities.

I think that at this point it would be good to use the HDMI to DVI converter as the PS3 does a very good job of up converting SD video. It is almost as good as Bluray. Notice that I said almost. When you look at both BluRay is still just better. And with your display size I think you will want all the quality you can have. It does take good into the realm of stunning.

I don't know what you have experienced but my observations are based on owning two of Sony's top of the line Displays. One in the US and the other in Europe. I find that the player does a better job than the display.

This of course is my opinion and your impressions may differ.

While this is true in a hi-fidelity application the fact is end users following a true hi-fi application is quite rare. Unless you are following all the rules of quality imaging save your money and follow the advice given; get a blu-ray player and enjoy yourself!
