PS3 Overheating

Recently purchased a PS3 as my BluRay Player. Not a gamer but am an avid video buff. Was watching first DVD last night ("the Mist", which had to be one of the worst movies I've seen in some time) and no more than 30 minutes into the movie, the PS3 fan kicks into high gear, which is quite loud and annoying. I've got my PS3 installed in a entertainment console cabinet with closed back, but had the front door open and have about 6" free area above the PS3. I went to the local Best Buy and they recommended a Nyko Intercooler Cooling Device. Before buying online I read their customer reviews which were about 90% very negative. Most reviews said the Intercooler does not fit the 40 GB PS3 and the fans are both unrelaible and loud. Has anyone else had experience with this Inercooler or better yet have an alternate suggestion for dealing with the heat? I'd like to avoid removing the back panel from the console or even drilling holes.

Thanks AGAIN ...

John

I have 2 PS3 used exclusively as blu-ray players. I STRONGLY recommend that you stand them on their end not lying flat (there is a nice stand available at AMAZON to help stabilize the machine in an upright position)...then the heat generated by the PS3 dissappates very easily and keeps the machine from getting too hot. It probably won't fit in a regular cabinet shelf in that position, so just put it to one side.

Or like many others get it out in the open... not one problem for mine.

A Possible Fix

I have a fix that worked for me, but frankly I don't understand WHY it worked, so this may be just a fluke.

My PS3 is on the top shelf of a 7 foot cabinet and laying on it's side. When I first got it, every time I wanted to use it I'd turn it on using the power switch in the back. Typically after a while the fan would come on and be annoying loud. But then I realized there was a better way. Now I keep the power switch in the back on all the time and use the electronic switch on the front, or the controller PS button to turn it on. Since then the fan has never come on once. It may be that the power up cold start sequence generates a lot of heat.

I have a Sony PS3 40GB that we use for movies and games. It sits on top of a stereo component cabinet horizontally. My son has played many hours of Call to Duty 4 with other players over the Comcast 12Mbs internet connection. We could hear the fan come on quite often but did not worry about it. Then one day it refused to boot up and gave a system error # 80010514. I contacted Sony Support over the internet and filled out a form. They sent me a UPS prepaid box and I am currently waiting for it to be picked up. I will try to provide the rest of the story as it unfolds. :)
