For unknown reasons, my signal strength and stations received is different, and did not change after I switched leads at the splitter. Not really a problem for me because I picked up 17 stations on one lead and 22 on the other lead. Very redundant as all I get really is FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS, CW and PBS.
I think your problem is a quirk in cabling.

Are cables the same as in both are good RG-6 or could one of them be RG-59. my guess is the 65 ft one is not only longer but is RG-59. That will give you a large drop in signal level to the one on the long run. That would make the weaker channels not come in, in comparison to the short run.
Ok, finally got the receiver to pick up the local channels. DISH sent me a replacement VIP622. It arrived on Wednesday the 5th of December. I eagerly hooked it up and the OTA to the receiver. Scanned for local channels, nothing. Same problem. Now remember with the OTA hooked to the TV I received all the local stations in HD perfectly. Signal strength at 90+. So I called DISH tech support again. Went through some checks and nothing. So they siad the would send a Tech out on Saturday to check it out. He had called this morning said he was on his way. While he was on his way I decided to, for some reason to unhooked the little UHF antenna on the back of the receiver, hooked up my OTA to the OTA connector on the back and low and behold grabbed all the local stations. Re-connected the little UHF antenna. Everything works perfectly. So for some reason that small antenna interfered somehow with the scan of the local digital channels. The tech arrived and could not explain it but did say that he has seen quite a bit of problems with OTA's and the VIP622.
I don't remember you saying anything about having the 2nd antenna hooked up. It is the problem the rec is seeing two signals. That is know as multipath. In analog it shows up as multiple images in digital it just kills some of the stations. If you are getting the stations w/o the little ant why are you even hooking up it up?
Everyone has a second antenna, it is used for the UHF remote for your second TV. Everyone that is in dual mode I guess would be a more true statement. Look at the back of your receiver, it is about 6-8 inches tall. Completely separate connection from the OTA connection.
Yes I have & use it but it in no way should interfere with OTA signals. It isn't connected to the same circuit as the OTA. I guess I'm missing something as to why it would affect the OTA channels.
I did not intend my statement to be a guarantee as to why it worked. It was just the only thing I had done different when I had scanned for local channels. Just a coincidence I think. But I am happy being to record my local HD channels now.
After getting nowhere with the original installer, the guy that came out today to reinstall my dish ripped off by the wind, and tech support I found the answer!! You have to go to System Setup > HDTV setup and change Analog type to off air. I went from one OTA channel to 20 just now. They just say digital service which I take to mean E* doesn't have the program information.
Yup, unlike DirecTV, Dish doesn't allow your on screen guide to be populated via the content contained in the PSIP OTA stream.
I'm guessing it's a marketing move on DISHs part, hoping you'll be foolish enough to spend an extra $4.99 for local into local service. Most of us can get local programming for free with an antenna. I believe subscribing to locals may populate the program guide...can anyone confirm this or did I just put my foot in my mouth?
Yes, I'm a long time DISH subscribe and Vip series receiver owner, no program guide data on my local OTA digital channels either...
You are correct. Subscribing to locals does mean you get the program guide. If you are in an area not serviced by HD locals, Dish may provide the program guide and your SD locals without the $4.99 as the HD locals are not available. IMHO, that's the best, since you don't have to set stupid manual timers.
I didn't get the new listing until the overnight program guide update. Figured it would have happened right away since I added the new channels, but that didn't happen. One or two still don't have program info but nonetheless I'm getting far more channels than dish offers, with great signal strength.
