Re: WD-73727 Typical Optical Engine Problem and BluRay Connection

Maybe it doesn't bother other other people but I hate the black lines at the top and bottom of the screen (in letter box formatting). Yes, you get a nice widescreen shot but it looks horrible not using the entire screen. I've tried everything I know in changing format settings on both the TV and DVD player. I was told by a rep at a store that it can't be changed because of the DVD formatting itself (2.40:1, 1920 x 1080p). I thought I'd verify it here to see if others found that to be the case. Some BluRay DVDs play fine without the black lines and I get a full screen picture, others do not. They all seem to have the same format (pre the cover). I can't seem to distinguish what makes one full screen and the other letterbox.

Any help anyone can lend would be greatly apprecated. Thanks!

The black bars are normal and are supposed to be there.

Your formatting options are limited with HD sources. If filling out the screen is more important than ultimate video quality you could always set your player for 480p and that will give you access to ALL your formatting options.

Nearly all 1st generation 1080p displays did not accept 1080p and that conversation was highlighted here often during that time period. Most 2nd generation product was 1080p capable and from the 3rd gen onward, not a problem.

Good News! - My faith is restored in Mitsubishi Products

Post by MrSmoofy »

Well just spoke to another nice person at extension 8 (the different between extension 5 and 8 customer serivice is night and day)

After speaking to her about the history of the TV she said a replacment is the solution.

Not only will the replace my 73727 with a 73736 but they are also going to replace the stand that I purchased with it so that it matchs the TV.

The only bad news is I don't think it will happen before superbowl but the relief I feel from finally getting this resolved and hopfully for good, not watching it at home is a very small price to pay.

Looking at the specs for the 73727 it says 1080p DLP Display, HDMI 1.3a, Plush1080p 12-Bit Digital Video Processing, Tru1080p Processing, 3 read HDMI inputs with CEC (not sure what CEC is) and SimplayHD Certified HDMI

Basically I hope all this means I'll get to watch my blu-ray player for the reason I purchased it.

Hope everyone else with the same issues gets the resolution I have.

Mitsubishi DLP light engine repair update

Post by redogleader »

Well after 10 months of service, the new light engine has decided to get a white glow about it.
No sharp edges and white text on black has a glow around it. I emailed Mitsu and they authorized a repair call from AVRC. Tech came out and said that all dlp he's seen has this issue. After much convincing that the TV should not be soft around the edges and white text on black should not have a glow around it, he called and deferred to my opinion. They authorized another light engine replacement and I received additional 12 month warranty on the new light engine replacement until 2/10. I also received a letter from Mitsu stating that they would replace the unit if it failed again.
This tv, when operating properly has a wonderful picture, but they just can't keep it going!
More updates as they occur.

Mitsubishi WD-73831 Opitical Engine

Post by ouch1234 »

Hi guys I bought this tv about 2 years ago and my Optical engine has failed. Lucky for me Mitsubishi had giving me a free extended warranty on the engine, which they are going to replace for free. I'm wondering if they have redesigned the optical engine or are they just replacing it with one just like the one I have, and in two years it's going to go out again? I've decided to go ahead and replace my lamp while we have the tv pulled out. The sevice company sold it to me at cost for $109.00 which I think that was a good deal , and I'll just use my old one for a spare. Does this tv have any filters that should be cleaned or replaced while we have the tv apart, and is there anything else I could service or clean ? I'm hoping to get the tv back to new condition while we're back there.

Thanks

I forgot to ask if there are any updates for this tv yet?

Thank You All - Mitsubishi WD-73727 Optical Engine Replacement

Post by konotori »

Thanks to this awesome thread, I was able to load up with enough ammunition to attack Mitshubishi full force with my problem. I actually bought this TV a couple weeks ago from somebody on craigslist.com for $500. He explained the problem to me and that is what lead me to this thread in the first place. I was able to talk Mitsubishi into replacing the optical engine at no charge, even though I don't have a receipt. The local repair company picked it up today and said that I should have it back no later than 7-10 days. I can't wait! I am so thrilled to be a proud owner of a 73"....thanks goes out to everyone on this thread!

Mitsubishi DLP HDTV's

Post by corvette54 »

I have had the same problem as each of you for the past 3 years. Mitsubishi has agreed to provide me with a new unit or monetary compensation for the next episode. Guess what last week, unit would not come, called Mitsubishi and they paid for 2 repair people from Best Buy. Was told the Ballast was going out. I have had 5 service calls and 3 lamps replaced in 3 year.

Here is the number for Mitsubishi 1800-332-3119 Opt # 8. I DO NOT have an extended warranty. Mitsubishi provided that for me after the 2nd complaint.

Be persistant ...... heck you can tell them I said call, Rick Griffith.... they know me by name .... ask for Customer Relations Specialist Adrianne Hardt.

or the CEO Abe Masaharu.

I was told by one the service techs that these units were made with a life expecptancy of 3 yrs. I do not know about you, but this was an investment in Home Theater for me. TV, Sound, speakers, seating over 12k.

Wow.

That is one heck of a statement from the tech with no more proof than the anecdotal fact that things break and they are in the service business. This is no different than the consumer expectation based on anecdotal fact that things rarely if ever break because they are not in the repair business and all they see is the improved lower failure rates.

Both are myths based totally on perception.

Products are made by human beings, are therefore imperfect and there is not a manufacturer out there that makes equipment that does not break. All manufacturers have products that rarely break and others that break more often. Ultimately the key to any purchase is that you are dealing with a manufacturer that also provides service and support after your purchase.

All readers should be conscience of the fact that while you can find many complaints on the internet you should not draw the anecdotal conclusion that there must be a massive problem because what you won't find is all the satisfied owners posting their satisfaction which in most cases based on sheer volume of numbers makes the failures in most cases seem like a drop in the bucket.

I can't speak for the light engine because as noted elsewhere in this thread we are not allowed to repair these to component level out in the field. I can't tell anybody based on personal knowledge if this is resolved; like the consumer the service center has to take it on faith that Mitsubishi has this figured out.

Ballast failures are not typical.

The premature lamp replacement may be due to other factors.

WD-73827 Lamp failure after Optical Engine Replacement

Post by bjlindsey »

Is it common after replacing the optical engine on a WD-73827 for the lamp to fail?

Hi bjlindsey,

The lamp can fail at anytime without warning. It does not last forever and wears out over time. Considering the age of this product and normal usage it is not surprising it went out. This is a point we bring up when we repair lamp based products. Based on age we often times forewarn the customer of potential failure and suggest getting a lamp in the home before it does.
