Kato--

Sony's PS3 doesn't have the analogue outputs to play full SACD. Also, its HDMI output doesn't have the coding for full SACD. So whatever you are hearing, it isn't full bandwidth SACD.

I can't find anything that says the PS3 supports SACD just like with the Toshiba HD DVD players and DVD Audio.

Does HD DVD Support DVD Audio

Post by Stratojak »

I'm pretty sure HD DVD does not. But I think you're asking if any of the HiDef players support DVD Audio and if you are, there's one BluRay player that does, the Panasonic BD10ak. It's the first BluRay that Panasonic put out and the only one of the 3 announced (Bd10, 30 & 50) that will do this - also comes with 7.1 analog outs - the BD30 and BD50 come with 5.1. It does not do SACD.

Yes it does but it performs poorly in other areas...

The Toshiba A35 may somehow play your DVD-A discs, but I assure you you it doesn't decode DVD-A format. If it is truly playing it back you are undoubtedly hearing it played as a standard DVD. I'm not saying that is bad, but it isn't as good as playback on an OPPO 980 or 981, which does recognize that format and decode it fully.

Richard, the 20 and 60GB older (read: more expensive) models support SACD playback and PS2 compatibility whereas the newer (read: cheaper) $399 40GB model does not. All PS3 models now feature DivX and WMV playback as well as Blu-Ray profile 1.1 (Bonus View) playback. Ironically, Sony's more expensive standalone Blu-Ray players do not support SACD playback. As stated, the Panasonic BD-10AK features DVD-A playback in addition to DVD, CD and Blu-ray.

The Toshiba HD DVD players playback CD's, DVD's and HD-DVD's. They don't play DivX, , DIVX, Xvid, WMV, Quicktime, MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, DVD-A, SACD or Blu-Ray.

Really... That's what I have... :)

Yep, the current PS3 manual doesn't say a thing but as you note that must reflect the recent version only.

This link just came up from another thread at the site and appears to be well maintained with informative stuff.
