----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Richard,

Coming back to you on this matter of 24fps on 1080p on these Toshiba
players.

After discussing again with two Toshiba high-ranking representatives I got
the same official response regarding no plans for 24fps on these two 1080p
players, this is one of the feedback messages:

"I cannot officially comment on if and/or when such products might support
24P, nor can I comment on whether other models might be introduced that do
support such a feature"

In other words, if there were any plans they are not official, my gut
feeling is that they might be forced to do something to be competitive on
that area, but it is up to each individual reader to trust Toshiba on
unofficial promises.

Our position representing the HDTV magazine must be not to mislead with
unofficial claims, or to allow for the public to be mislead using our own
channels of communication without proper clarification, an activity that
could cause consumer loses when their purchases are based in unofficial
information.

Again, I really hope the 24fps feature is implemented, but our official
position for now should be to be cautious until Toshiba officially announces
the feature.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo

Hi JLeslieR,

This is all videophile high performance talk...

The content is on the disc as 1080P24. If you have a 1080P24 capable display and the player is spitting this stream out directly off the disc you have video nirvana because you get to bypass all processing and also eliminate film judder, an inescapable by product of 2/3 pull down.

HDMI 1.3 and audio - do I need that?

Richard, thanks for all the great info. I wonder if you would mind commenting on the last part of my post, regarding the meaning of an "HDMI 1.3 certification."

The HDMI Institute implies that if a vendor states that its hardware supports "HDMI 1.3," that alone does not guarantee any particular HDMI 1.3 enabled capabilities. For example, if a display touts HDMI 1.3 connectors, that unit still may not be capable of supporting Deep Color.

HDMI Institute cautions buyers to look for capabilities, not just the name HDMI 1.3. To me this is deceptive. It seems that "HDMI 1.3" refers to little more than a cable and does not represent a set of standards. This type of deception is an affront to consumers.

For example, what about a PS3. If a PS3 supports HDMI 1.3, does it support all the features of HDMI 1.3 or just some of them. I've looked on the Sony site and it is impossible to find anything about the HDMI version, let alone the specific capabilities. Deep Color is never mentioned.

I for one am offended by this apparent duplicity.

Thanks again for all the great references.

Les

HDMI is bit more than just a cable but that does not change your main complaint.
Where you aware of the similar game with Bluray licensing? The audio decoding capability is open ended from SD only to doing it all.

It seems that even being able to find the fine print on actual features is going to get difficult as you have already pointed out. We are going to need better reviews to flesh all this out or there is going to be massive confussion and frustration with the industry as a whole.

About all I can do is agree with you for the most part... it sucks... :?

So did Toshiba ever provide a firmware upgrade for 1080p24 support?

24p Output Coming In September
Toshiba at long last has confirmed that it will offer firmware updates in early September for the HD-A20 ($399) and HD-XA2 ($799) that will enable 1080p/24 output for both players.

Firmware Update Version: 2.7, 11/13/2007

Applicable Models: HD-XA2, HD-A20, HD-A2, HD-A2W, and HD-D2.

Please configure the Ethernet port. You may need to turn on DHCP and DNS.

This firmware update adds support for 1080p/24Hz output and for more on-screen language display options. In addition, this firmware update improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web- enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba.

When I connect my HD DVD Player to my HDTV or HD Monitor using a HDMI to DVI adaptor cable or a HDMI to DVI adaptor, the output resolution of the player remains fixed at 480i. This firmware update addresses the issue.

The firmware update addresses and improves HDMI and DVI connectivity issues. If you still experience such issues, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable. Make sure your display input is set to HDMI (or DVI). If your display has more than one HDMI/DVI input, make sure that all connected HDMI/DVI source devices are powered on (even if not in use). If none of these solve the issue, please turn off the TV and the HD DVD player. Check all connections. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable. Turn on the TV first and then turn on the HD DVD player.

This firmware update addresses various playability issues. You should also check to be sure that the disc is clean and, if the disc will not operate at all, that you are inserting the disc with the right side up. In the event that playback freezes or stops, press and hold the ON/STANDBY button on the front of the player for approximately ten seconds. This will cause the player to turn off. After the player turns off, turn the player back on by pressing the ON/STANDBY button, and then press the OPEN/CLOSE button to remove the disc.
