I think I'll take your advice and donate the old Sanyo to the kid. He got our old tv and will be thrilled to ad the stereo speakers. I'll start looking for a middle of the road 5 channel theatre system.

Those are good values. You can also buy used, where you can get a kick ass system that you normally can't afford for about a third of the price, try audiogon.com
This might be a better option for novices who aren't really sure what they are looking for and might not be happy with their first purchases and find that they want more.
It's a very reliable site, much more so then eBay, where (for the most part)audio fans trade up until they find their dream system.
