Apparently Versus was trying to hold them hostage and charge more than they were worth. You do realize that Comcast owns Versus, right? DirecTV stood their ground and Comcast finally gave in. It's been back on DirecTV for a few weeks now. It wasn't about what they could afford - it was about what was a fair price and it sounded like Comcast was trying to give them the shaft.
