Note: I wrote this entry earlier this week, and the situation has undoubtedly developed further since I put this together. So while the details may need to be updated, the issues remain the same.
You may be expecting some insightfull commentary about Black Friday deals on HDTVs, but I’m leaving that for others to cover. Instead, [...]

It is seemingly tivial to use our HDTV perspective as a point of view, but I agree it is a valid point. It generally takes a personal connection to get focus, and maybe America is the worst of industrialized countries for that. We just don't care enough about the rest of the world and the implications. And conversely we don't care enough (at least progressives in the last election!) about our own turf and how it interacts with the world. I mean, South Korea and Taiwan and especially China grew massively based on our lack of self protection.
So we have cheap TVs....
And we slipped down the slope to long term high unemployment - - and a fabulously wealthy oligarchy.

It's not likely to change either
Our slide down hill isn't likely to change until we get rid of the Progressives, but unfortunately they've pretty much taken over one party and are making inroads into the other.
We are now a nation of consumers that produce little in the way of goods (relatively speaking) compared to what we use.

Oh Roger, it could not be more obtuse than to think the progressives have had an real inroads - and a key segment sat home this election. Hell it is the only reason the do nothing party won ANYTHING - look at the realilty of the numbers. The party I will assume you support has gone so far to the right - to outright Facissim - that you all think Hitler was a liberal. We the people of America have sat in the every warming pot of water unfeeling - until this recession and it's depression levels of unemployment. Meanwile the oligarchy bought the media, hypnotized everyone with BS, moved all the jobs off shore, dropped taxes far below what the wealthy consume in services, and tossed all protections.
And spent 8 years more or less ignoring North Korea.
Of course we mostly no longer produce, BUT NOT BY CHOICE. I work for a very large company and believe me it grates on all of us each time a job is offshored - or similarly in the race to the bottom that the right so very much loves - outsourced.
Of course the good news is the slow march of justice is moving along, Tom Delay was convicted. Hopefully his connectivity with Rove will begin to take him down...right up to treason.
Now back to subject, seems the wheels of diplomacy are working, and perhaps we can have even yet more talking - but gladly in comparison to what a Korean war might mean to their people, and us (trival - but not to their economy) consumers!

Yup..sorta
First we have a lot riding on S Korea as far as electronics which we use in almost everything now days. That's why the stock market goes nuts when ever something goes "bang" over there.
If they "have at it" again, we will see higher prices, and effects not just in electronics.
Yes, the one party made great gains not due to their platform but due to the Progressives that people wanted out, which sorta sounds like the previous election where people voted for change what ever it might be. Unfortunately it's ending up costing us a great deal. However the Progressives are in both parties, not just the liberals. They do have a much larger presence in one party, but are gaining ground in the other.

I'm sorry to be so blunt (yeah tangling with me is a bother, after all the truths are), but - subjectively said-you have drank the cool aid if you actually think this government is anything but center. What you all are so drowing in is that you think your right wing fringe positions are center. What your positions are, are Facist, oligarchist, kleptocratist and are clearly hypocritical, misdirected. Your self funded media fraud machine has you actually believing your own pathology. Eg. if you don't think there is a global warming problem, you are willfully mentally retarded.HDTVfun wrote:Steve,
We have tangled before and I'm not going to entangle myself again, but...
you all think Hitler was a liberal
You need to study history dude... Hitler and the progressive liberals have far more in common when it comes to the propaganda of right living than you appear to be aware of.
That being said, I don't think the market cares that much about imports as it does from nuclear war. Huge difference there. Any war at this point may force us to wreck the economy. Oh, I'm sorry, Bush et. al. already did that. I guess this would be a final blow?.

Civility, if you please
Folks, I started this thread with my piece about the brewing conflict in Korea, but the discussion has strayed far from that subject. In my opinion, this forum is best used for discussing technology issues. There are plenty of other places on the Web where political and historical debates are welcome, and I recommend that you save such discussions for those sites.
But no matter what the content is of the discussion, I do ask that you restrain yourselves from name-calling, no matter how justified you think you may be. The HDTV Magazine site is a community of like-minded individuals, in that we share an interest in home entertainment technology. There is no call for spitting in somebody else's beer here. It's a friendly place where everyone is encouraged to share. Personal attacks not only are likely to veer way off track (as I think is the case here), but even worse, it is likely to discourage others from adding their opinions or questions. And when that happens, we all lose.
So if you must continue this thread here, please tone down the rhetoric and avoid personal attacks. It's for everyone's benefit.
Thanks,
Alfred
