Sony LCD RP KDF-50WE655 - blackout problem

Post by homerhd »

I have a 50" Sony rear projection LCD set, circa 2005. Over the last 2 months or so, at least once an hour, the screen goes black just for barely a second and the comes right back on as if nothing happened. I'm running off of a Comcast HD DVR box. Nothing in my set up has changed recently. The one thing I can't say is if it only happens while watching normal tv and during dvd's. for what it's worth I'm still burning the original bulb. Any thoughts on what might be going on here?

On another note, I had my first opportunity to check out the new 3-d sets at Best Buy. While initially impressive, it got annoying fast and I couldn't help but to remember my childhood View Master. It's unnatural for all planes of depth to be in focus and to show depth at the same time. If you don't believe me, hold your hand 10 inches in front of your face. You can either focus on your hand or what's beyond it, not both. 3D allows both to be in focus while also simulating the items at different distances. This is further from reality than 2D. The good news is that I'll be able to buy a killer, non-3D set at a real bargain this fall!

Gee, if you have it on hand stick it in!

The lamp can develop a problem with age where it turns on and off continuously. On for 2 minutes, off, on for 2 minutes, off...

I bought this in January of 2005 and run it approximately 4 hours a day so it's not like I'm not due for a bulb change. Like I said it's only cutting out for a second about once every hour or so. It still fires up just as quickly as it always has. So far this is the only symptom. There may be a shift in color temp but it's not noticable. I may as well put it in since I'll no doubt be upgrading this fall anyway.

I heard a rumor that somebody was about a year away from glasses free 3-d. Any truth to that? I had heard that technology was a long, long way off.

Here's another one for you. A buddy of mine only has one eye and took his son to see the latest 3-d animated movie. I was curious as to what he would experience. Blurry without glasses, 2-d with the glasses on.

Thanks,
Homer

Dunno a thing about glass free 3D that is affordable!

As for your buddy with one eye the result was expected. Without the glasses he will see the same thing you do, two images on the screen. With glasses he sees the same thing you do but in 2D, with the other image removed.

Let me know if changing the lamp solves it. Customers only call me when the problem is constant and therefore frustrating.
