By Ken Werner • May 10, 4:18pmThe white LEDs used in conventional LCD-TV backlight units — which are actually blue LEDs with a broadband yellow phosphor inside the package — produce a white light that has insufficient output and purity in the green and red.
All current approaches to improving LCD-TV color gamut and purity involve improving the intensity and purity […]

By Ken Werner • Mar 5 2013, 3:39amDigital Signage Expo (DSE), running from February 26 to 28 this year in Las Vegas, had 22% more exhibitors this year than last, but the growth felt larger than that and the high energy level was palpable.
Exhibitors I questioned were pleased with their booth traffic, with some “complaining” of being too busy.
One exhibitor [...]
By The HT Guys • Feb 1 2013, 8:18amThere are a few reasons you would want to automate your home.
Very close to the top of the list is saving money.
And the one item that uses the most energy is your heating and air conditioning system.
Today we'll take a look at four thermostats that let you monitor and control your HVAC system from anywhere in the world.
When you decide to build out a complete automation system these thermostats can be integrated right in.
By The HT Guys • Jul 20 2012, 7:29amThere was a disturbance in the HT Guys force after our initial revue of the DTV Green Dish, a.k.a Dishtenna so we decided to post a little bit of an update to the original review.
We also discuss four very highly rated HDTVs you should consider if you're looking to buy a new one and ten technology trends that may change the way you live.
By The HT Guys • Jul 13 2012, 5:35amThe best way to cut the cord without giving up TV is to go the old fashioned route, put up an antenna and watch all the HDTV you want absolutely free.
It's amazing that the signals are still floating across the air free of charge, but they are.
But what do you do if you're too far away from the local broadcast tower to actually receive very many channels, if any? You may want to give the new DTV Green Dish, aka Dishtenna a try.
By Alfred Poor • Apr 19 2012, 1:00pmOn Monday, the Consumer Electronics Association announced that participants in the eCycling Leadership Initiative managed to recycle 460 million pounds of consumer electronics in 2011.
This number is even more impressive when you consider that this is more than one and a half times the 300 million pounds that was recycled in 2010.
Drop-off locations [...]
By The HT Guys • Mar 16 2012, 5:24amIt was pretty clear that the OLED TVs demonstrated by LG and Samsung stole the show at the last Consumer Electronics Show we went to.
We were really impressed by the color, contrast and sharpness of the picture.
However, there are some issues that need to be resolved before we see mainstream OLED HDTVs in sizes that we would want in our living rooms.
Rather than go with an OLED TV, Sony displayed a technology called Crystal LED.
Crystal LED takes six million tiny LEDs to create a picture that they hope will rival OLED technology.
A 1080P TV has nearly 2 million pixels on screen.
Crystal LEDs TVs take three LEDs, one for red, green, and blue, and combine them for each pixel.
Each pixel is mounted directly in front of the display.
This is not an LED based LCD but an actual LED TV.
By Shane Sturgeon • Oct 19 2011, 1:46amThe Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced the formation of the 3DTV Technology and Energy Consumption Discovery Group.
CEA expects 3DTV shipments will top 3.6 million in 2011 and nearly double that in 2012, reaching 6.9 million.
As more manufacturers add 3D-features to their displays and content producers continue to create more 3D material, this discovery group will examine the state of 3DTV and whether energy measurement standards should be updated to reflect changes in technology.
By Alfred Poor • Jul 19 2011, 1:00pmThe display market research firm DisplaySearch has released its latest “Quarterly TV Design and Features Report” for Q2′11, in which the company points out the energy-savings advantages of LED backlights for LCD HDTVs.

By Alfred Poor • May 19 2011, 1:00pmYesterday, I attended a special conference-within-a-conference about Green Displays, hosted by IMS Research.
It turns out that this topic runs deep and wide, but there was one particular aspect that I thought would be worth sharing.
Consider the following comparison between two Sony 46″ LCD HDTVs.
The Qualia 005 was the first LCD HDTV to use [...]
By Shane Sturgeon • May 13 2011, 3:04amAt SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium May 17-19 in Booth 707 at the LA Convention Center, Samsung is exhibiting a first-of-its-kind technology developed with its affiliate Nouvoyance that blends three leading-edge technologies to enhance ultra-low power High Definition TV (HDTV) display products while enabling dramatic power savings.
In this demonstration, frame sequential color (FSC), PenTile® technology, and RGB local dimming have been combined to produce a TV display technology that features a wider array of colors, virtually eliminates color breakup, and operates at approximately 25 percent of the power of legacy LCD TV technology.
By combining the strengths all three technologies...
By Alfred Poor • Mar 2 2011, 1:00pmNo, the title is not about the new shoots appearing as spring arrives (there still are some piles of snow around here as I write this).
I’m talking about environmentally-friendly ideas.
I just came across a site (actually I rediscovered it) that has some great resources.
It’s the Green tab at the Digital Tips [...]
By Alfred Poor • Feb 7 2011, 1:00pmNo, this is not an announcement of a major recall.
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) commissioned a study of energy use by flat panel HDTVs, covering 13″ to 65″ LCDs and 42″ to 65″ plasma sets.
According to a press release, the results indicate that power consumption of LCD sets when in use dropped 63% [...]
By Alfred Poor • Nov 8 2010, 1:00pmThe new 42PFL6805 LCD HDTV from Philips boasts a “green” feature that you won’t find on the screen; the set’s remote control has solar panels on the back so that it can recharge using the light available in the room.
In my experience, we get a year or two from a set of batteries in [...]
By Alfred Poor • Sep 15 2010, 1:00pmOkay, what would you pay to get live streaming content from a collection of broadcast television stations? We’re talking about the same content that you could get for free over the air in a major metropolitan area, but that instead you can access over the Internet, no matter where you are.
And even if you [...]

By Alfred Poor • May 26 2010, 1:00pmOLEDs make my heart sing.
They are everything that a display should be: thin, light, great color, emissive, energy efficient, no viewing angle problems.
Other people seem to agree; according to some sources, 45 million OLED displays will be sold this year for mobile applications such as cell phones and personal media players.
And if [...]
By Terry Paullin • Dec 14 2009, 4:46pmWe did it again! Yup, my very own State of California has once again been the first to ring the Stupid-Bell in an attempt to lead the Nation into yet another set of ill-advised legislations destined to cost its population jobs, cash and freedom of choice.
Undoubtedly you have read about our most recent embarrassment, the enactment into law of “Standards” that will require most flat panel televisions sold in the State to be 33% “more efficient” by 2011 and 50% more-so by 2013.
Consider for a moment...
