HDTV and Home Theater Podcast - Podcast #609: Black Friday Preview 2013

By The HT Guys • Nov 15 2013, 9:08am

As the years come and go, one thing remains the same, Black Friday has some killer good deals for the home theater enthusiast. In 2008 the cheapest Blu-ray player was $128 and a 50-inch 720p plasma was going for $900. In 2009 the Blu-ray player price dropped to $78 and you could get a 50-inch 1080p plasma with a Blu-ray player for $1000. In 2013, it seems like you can get all of that, and more, for less than $1000.

In a CNET article titled Best HDTVs Overall, the top 5 TVs were plasma, and that doesn't even include the forthcoming Panasonic ZT60 which won best of show at CES. In the following paragraphs we'll try to compare and contrast the plasma and LED LCDs and see if there is a real reason why LEDs are putting plasma out of business.

By The HT Guys • Jan 11 2013, 6:54am

Another CES has come and gone. At the risk of being permanently banned, we've brought back everything we saw and did in Vegas to share it with everyone who couldn't be there. As with every CES, we saw some amazing things and some not so impressive ones as well. Big themes from this year were: 3D is waning, 4K (UltraHD) is emerging, and Plasma may be on the verge of a comeback.

We have been trying to get a hold of a Vizio TV for review for some time now but with no luck. We recently did a review of the Pioneer Elite PRO-150FD 60" Plasma TV back in November (Podcast 224) so when Pioneer offered us the 42 inch model we weren't sure that we wanted to review a TV that was so similar. Since the TV was 720p we decided that it was different enough to warrant a review.

So you've got your eye on a shiny new Plasma or LCD TV and think, well
if I buy the flat panel TV, I might as well mount it to the wall,
right? For some it may seem like a walk in the park. For others it
might sound like a daunting task. But really, no matter what your
background or skill level, mounting a flat panel TV is pretty easy.
